Remember when I used to say that I don't crochet?

Well, I do now.  I could kind of crochet borders on projects, but they weren't amazing.  I struggled with the concept of where to put the hook.  I had a few friends sit down to try to show me how to crochet, but I still hard a hard time with it.  Finally, it dawned on me.  When you knit, the "V"'s are side by side.  When you crochet, they're stacked on top of each other.

My first project was to make some adorable little espadrilles type sandals for my daughter.  The gauge wasn't even, so they weren't the same size, but it was a good starting point for me.  I was beginning to understand how to crochet and how to follow crochet patterns.

I decided to challenge myself further, and I signed up for a subscription box from FreshStitches.  Every two months I receive a box with a pattern and supplies to create a fantastic amigurumi creation.

Last March, I received my first kit.  It was a reversible chick/egg in time for spring.  I frogged that sucker so many times because I couldn't keep track of where I was in the pattern, or that my gauge was too wonky.  I also noticed that my hand was getting ridiculously sore from all of this.  I brought out my trusty stitch markers, Googled some YouTube videos on tension, and away I went!  Suddenly, the project was coming along better and faster than before.

He wasn't perfect, but, eh.  It's a toy.  It doesn't have to be perfect.

  1. Awesome!! That sounds like a cool monthly kit! I might need to try that myself. So far I've only managed a washcloth.
