The first "homecoming" dress

A lot of sock yarn, and a lack of desire to knit socks again... what's a knitter to do?

Well, why not use the sock yarn to make a coming home outfit for your newborn baby?

With a skein of madeline tosh sock yarn in Lepidoptra, and a book on what do with sock yarn, I found the perfect dress to make for my new born.

Now, madtosh is quite lovely, but.. (and this might be rather blasphemous), I'm not sure the hype and price tag match it?  Meh.  I'm not super crazy about variegated colorways once they knit up, and I suppose that I'm not a fan of 100% merino yarns.  It really is a pretty skein and it's squishy, which is why I made the impulse buy at $27.  I haven't exactly found myself going back for more, so live and learn I suppose.

"Hey, didn't you say that you shouldn't use 100% animal fibers for making baby/kid stuff?"  Yes.  Yes, I did.  However, I made this before I knew better.    See, this was made while I was waiting for my daughter to arrive, and before I even told anyone that she was a she.  I didn't even put this on my ravelry page until today (and I'm rather meticulous about my ravelry page).

I still need to put this in a shadow box.  It's been folded up in my office for the last 2.5 years.

I did start to worry about how the dress was sized for 0-3 months. I made an alteration to the pattern and only did one repeat of the diamond trellis on the front yoke so it would accommodate a new born.  I think it worked out well. I didn't take many pictures of her in the dress (I was rather overwhelmed by everything and so terribly sleep deprived), but I did get a good one of her and her daddy.
