A while ago, I found a neat idea via StumbleUpon -- Rainbow cake! It's a fun, easy, and pretty way to make a cake. I cheated and used a Betty Crocker mix for this, but the results were beautiful.
So after mixing up the batter of some white cake, I divided it into 6 bowls. I grabbed some food coloring gel from the grocery store, and made red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple batter. Then I took two cake pans, and poured half of each bowl into each pan. Pan 1: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Pan 2: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red.
When it was done baking per instructions on the back of the box, I frosted with some "fun-fetti" frosting (because, let's face it, we're all little kids at heart).
At a later attempt to make the cake, I attempted to "swirl" the colors together for a tie-dye look. It didn't work out as well as I had hoped -- instead the batter turned kind of grey. Still tasted fine, but I didn't proudly display that cake all over my facebook wall!
