Happy (belated) Birthday to my mom!

No, I didn't forget her birthday.  I just didn't blog about her birthday present on her birthday like I originally intended.

After receiving her scarf, I promised to make her something that didn't contain a ton of mistakes.  She told me that she wanted a shawl because as I mentioned before, she's always cold.  After sifting through several patterns, I found one by Lion Brand called the Honest Warmth Shawl.  I showed it to my mom, and she had a few recommendations for how to alter it and make it custom for her.

Instead of being a long triangle, we shortened it up.  In order to keep the thickness on the arms, I decided to start about half way into the pattern, casting on 90 some stitches instead of the 3.  I also decided that I didn't like the garter stitch pattern, so I did a more basic knit/purl combo.

When I was finished, it looked too plain.  I didn't want to add fringe, because I didn't think the Lion Brand Homespun Yarn would work really well for fringing.  I taught myself some more basic crochet to create a shell border around the shawl.  The crochet part wasn't perfect, but it was a major accomplishment for me in the world of crochet!
